Tartini - Sarabanda
Watch on YouTube:
I recently heard a version of this on YouTube and was blown away by this gorgeous melody.

It's also called "Sarabande" or "Sarabande in G minor", and is dated 1740-1750.

I've arranged it for flute (or two flutes) and piano/harpsichord.

I also created a backing track featuring strings accompaniment.

I've transposed it from the original in G minor, up to B minor to suit the range of the flute, and to allow the second flute part to appear below the main tune.

The second flute part is intentionally composed to be of easy to early intermediate difficulty.

So it's ideal for a flute teacher to play with his or her student, for example.

An amazing violinist....

Giuseppe Tartini (1692 -1770) was an amazing Italian violinist, composer, and theorist who helped establish the modern style of violin bowing and formulated principles of musical ornamentation and harmony.

He directed the orchestra of the chancellor of Bohemia in Prague (1723–26), then he founded a school of violin playing and composition. He made a concert tour of Italy in 1740.

Tartini’s playing was said to be remarkable for its combination of technical and poetic qualities, and his bowing became a model for later schools of violinists.

A very talented composer and violinist

The Devil’s Trill

The Devil’s Trill is another piece by Tartini - a violin sonata. It's Tartini's best-known work, notable for its technically difficult passages.

Tartini himself gave the work its byname, explaining that he had written down the piece after waking from a particularly vivid dream of the Devil playing a violin at the end of his bed, with ferocious virtuosity.

He later stated that his sonata was but a shadow of what he had witnessed in the dream, for he was unable to capture on the page the Devil’s full intensity.
